Homestead/Pioneer Skills and Crafts Classes

Summer is bringing a “career change” for us. Sam will continue to do handyman work on a limited basis and I’ll continue to sell honey, honey products, herb plants and herb products at the Old Miakka Farmer’s Market on Saturdays but I’ll only be open at home Tuesday-Friday by appointment or “chance” (if the gate is open, the farm is open).

The “career change” is a greater involvement in the Crowley Museum and Nature Center education program for both children and adults. We’ll be leading public, private and homeschool kids on tours of the pioneer area and the nature walk and demonstrating and teaching homestead/pioneer skills and crafts. We’ll also be teaching these same skills to adults, emphasizing preparedness/homestead skills, with an eye to the future.

I’ve really enjoyed having the farm open most years since 1991 but our bodies tell us it’s time for both of us to do a bit less manual labor and start to pass our skills on to the next generations. We want to thank all of you loyal customers for your business and friendship all these years and hope we can continue that relationship in the future. Please don’t hesitate to call if you need honey or herbs and come out to visit us at the Old Miakka Farmer’s Market located at the Crowley Museum and Nature Center on Myakka Rd. just before the north entrance to Myakka State Park. We’re looking forward to seeing you there!

  • Hi Jen-
Sorry for the delay in answering.
I don’t have any classes scheduled for January or the first half of February as we are gearing up for the 5th Annual Southwest Florida Heritage Festival at Crowley Museum & Nature Center on February 11th. However, I’m at the Old Miakka Farmer’s Market every Saturday and would love to meet you and talk some Saturday or at the Heritage Festival. There are a lot of us out here in Old Miakka who have animals (chickens, goats, cows, pigs etc.) and gardens and love living the country life. I started homeschooling back in 1985 so I think we have much in common….and my husband is from a Florida pioneer family (1830) and knows much about how to eat off the land etc. I will put you on my mailing list to keep in touch until I can get some classes scheduled after the Heritage Festival. Thanks for your interest!
    Debbie
