Hi Jen-
Sorry for the delay in answering.
I don't have any classes scheduled for January or the first half of February as we are gearing up for the 5th Annual Southwest Florida Heritage Festival at Crowley Museum & Nature Center on February 11th. However, I'm at the Old Miakka Farmer's Market every Saturday and would love to meet you and talk some Saturday or at the Heritage Festival. There are a lot of us out here in Old Miakka who have animals (chickens, goats, cows, pigs etc.) and gardens and love living the country life. I started homeschooling back in 1985 so I think we have much in common....and my husband is from a Florida pioneer family (1830) and knows much about how to eat off the land etc. I will put you on my mailing list to keep in touch until I can get some classes scheduled after the Heritage Festival. Thanks for your interest!

Hey Deb,

You might not remember me...we used to hang out together Sunday afternoons as you made me drool over your lovely place before we had to drag ourselves back to suburbia. Soon we found ourselves in North Florida and with the help of the huge book that you sent us off with tried to make a go at country living! I can't help but think of you several times a day- not only when I reference Carla Emery, ( which is often) but when I see the enamelware spoon, the red sugar can, oh- and the mugwort that keeps coming back after 10 years of mowing:) and then there is this other thing that I am trying to add as a photo- but I'll have to do it on another mail...
Anyway, Love your website and your place looks wonderful as usual...We had decided to give you a call this afternoon - just because - it's about TIME:) Talk to you soon,

Thanks, Debbie, for these great tips! I love the ideas of growing our own herbs, but have not yet learned when and how to keep them pruned and harvested here in central FL. I'm not getting very efficient use of them yet, and I have a goal of raising all or most of the herbs our family needs. Looks I have a lot of homework ahead of me.

BTW it appears that the peppermint you gave me is surviving! Now I need to keep it alive and thriving! I had lots of spearmint growing in a container and after our move to town I totally neglected it. Recently I thought it died off, but I see new shoots coming back. I also had cilantro really going to town and I was harvesting the lower branches as it grew, but it suddenly perished. Maybe it needed to be transplanted into a larger pot. I can't wait to get settled at our new place so I can have more permanent arrangements for these little plants. Our malabar spinach is doing much better since we planted it in a larger pot, but I'm not sure how often to harvest and how much to cut off at once. So much to learn...

Any resources you recommend that would tell me when to do what to various herbs as they grow here in central FL (kind of like you outlined in this post to do in July)?

Thanks again for your input!
Blessings,
Fransene

hi deb,
i really enjoyed meeting you yesterday. i wanted to send over a copy of what i posted in my 2 homeschool groups here. we really enjoyed our time. looking forward to seeing you a in a couple of weeks!
mama, grace, and dinah

hi all,
we went to the farmer's market at crowley nature center yesterday.
recall that you get free admission to crowley also.
we had a Lovely time.
we love the boardwalk walk there.
the farmers market was Very small. being really new, i'm hopeful that the population of vendors will be increasing.

available yesterday:

goat milk and goat milk stuff
raw cow milk
really beautiful pottery made with leaves
THE most delicious honey i've Ever had (and I'm a self labeled honey Connoisseur , for what self-labels are worth)
DELICIOUS gluten free baked goods (i'm usually not a fan of the gluten free foods)
extraordinary georgia peaches for less than .99/lb.
chickens
chicken eggs

everything i priced was very reasonable.

it was a very charming experience and i hope you'll try it out.

also, someone from this forum went and i know she'll tell you all about how awesome it was (ahem.) and that very nearby is a florida native plants nursery.

a full day of wholesome and delicious fun (:

Hi Suzanne-
That combination was just something I've always wanted. The "cottage garden" to me is more of a look...very full, tall, short, colorful, whatever.
Thanks for the comment!

Hello, I am so happy to find your website! And to find that you are so close. I LOVE this post about your cottage garden. I dream of someday having an edible front garden/yard. I am enjoying reading your blog.

We are in a temporary living situation right now, so gardening like this in not possible, but we pray we will soon be settled where God wants us. I noticed you sell many potted herbs, so when the time comes I will know where to get what I need.

Last year we began Live Ready Now, Inc to encourage and help families who want to be prepared for whatever may come. We are still learning so much ourselves, but feel the need to help others down the same path of recapturing lost and forgotten skills.

God bless you in what you are doing.
Blessings,
Fransene
